Nite Lites Advisors

The purpose of Nite Lites is to instill leadership skills into young people through servicing the community. If you have a desire to help the community, this program is for you. Participants learn leadership skills by planning and implementing activities and events that benefit the community. The group is made-up of mainly high school students with some middle-school youth; there is neither an age nor grade requirement. Nite Lites meets in the Learning Center. Nite Lites meets between 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. every Friday. The program usually lasts an hour, but can go on for a little longer if there's a lot to discuss. Nite Lites is a part of Chinatown Beacon Center because it is a program that follows the organization's mission statement, which clearly states the support of a young person's health and well being in the community.

Frequently Asked Questions

When was your program first started?

Nite Lites was founded in 2002.

How did your program start?

Nite Lites was started by young people who were already participants of other Chinatown Beacon Center programs. They wanted a program that promoted leadership and serviced the community needs.

Who helped develop this program?

The entire Chinatown Beacon Center staff helped develop the Nite Lites group. The program's first advisor, Alison Satake, was integral in creating the foundation and goals of Nite Lites.

What are some of your program's challenges and successes?

The program's biggest challenge is the continuing issue of how to best serve the community. Because there are so many community events, it is difficult to decide in which ones to participate. The success of Nite Lites is not only measured in the number of community events it particpated in through the years, but also in the fact that all of the program's participants have grown to be effective leaders in the community.
