Sherman Elementary School After School Community Enrichment

Aaron Gresens
After School Community Enrichment Coordinator

This is the first year that the Chinatown Beacon Center has had an After School Community Enrichment (ACE) program at Sherman Elementary School. The program was developed in collaboration between the beacon staff and the administration at Sherman. Located at Union Street between Franklin and Gough Sherman does not fall within the bounds of the “Chinatown” neighborhood, but because many of the school’s students live in Chinatown and because of the Chinese bilingual program at the school, it is right at home with the Chinatown Beacon Center. Participation in the program is free.

The Sherman ACE program runs throughout the school year from the time school dismisses at 1:50p.m. to 4:50p.m., Monday through Friday. Sherman ACE currently serves around 70 students in grades 2, 3, 4, and 5. The purpose of the program is to provide increased opportunities for growth, and learning, and provide a structured environment for completing and receiving help with homework during after school hours. The 2004-2005 schedule is as follows:

1:50p.m. – 2:50p.m. Homework
3:00p.m. – 3:30p.m. Snack and Recess
3:35p.m. – 4:30p.m. Enrichment

Enrichment activities allow students to expand upon what they have learned during the school day through fun projects, science experiments, reading, and games as well as allowing students to gain exposure to activities not usually covered during the school day like cooking, art, and athletics.

The Sherman ACE program is currently looking into beginning a bus service for its participants. Please contact the program site coordinator for information regarding a bus.
